Project Based Learning (PBL)
As part of the Higher Ed 4.0 project, we intend to develop a model for project-based learning for the ATU. The first two years of a project-based learning course will see high level learning outcomes delivered via project-based learning, with the low-level learning outcomes delivered via self-directed learning. This will be followed by two years of work-based learning which will feature a combination of study and on-the-job training culminating in a final year project.
PBL Masters in Engineering (ATU Galway)

The PBL Masters in Engineering is now running, with the PBL undergraduate degree in Engineering under development and due to be implemented in 2025. Students will then be able to undertake a degree in engineering by completing projects – no exams – across various disciplines, including civil, mechanical and manufacturing engineering, along with robotics.
Pending – expected September 2025.
PBL MEng in Automation and Digital Manufacturing

Automation and Digital Manufacturing implementation has become a priority for the Manufacturing Industry, but, unfortunately, the pool of talents is not currently available to support the need of industry.
Highly skilled Automation Engineers are required immediately to drive the implementation. The MEng in Automation & Digital Manufacturing is the last building block in the development of a suite of programmes designed to support industry in their digital transformation.
The MEng is designed to upskill Automation Engineers from a level 8 to level 9 in two years through Project-Based Learning (PBL). Central to the programme is a 50-credit project conducted within industry and scaffolded by four online modules in the first year.
The aim of the project is to support students with an online repository of information relevant to the field and have equipment and expertise available to support the development of a proof of concept.
